The Uluru Statement from the Heart, released on 26 May 2017 by delegates to the First Nations National Constitution Convention, includes the following:
“We seek constitutional reforms to empower our people and take a rightful place in our own country…
“We call for the establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution…
“We seek a Makarrata Commission to supervise a process of agreement-making between governments and First Nations and truth-telling about our history.”
In October 2025 the Victorian parliament became the first Australian parliament to pass legislation adopting Voice, Treaty and Truth – the three pillars of reform set out in the Uluru Statement from the Heart. The legislation became law on 13 November 2025. Other state parliaments and the federal government should pass similar legislation as well.
First Nation languages also should be preserved and used as widely as possible. For example, primary and secondary students who speak a First Nation language should have the opportunity to study in their First Nation language as well as in English, and students who do not speak First Nation languages should have the opportunity to learn them.
